Mystic: A NPC Class for the d20 System

This class is part of my on going effort to run Spelljammer in 3.5. It closely mirrors the Adept class, but casts arcane spells instead of divine spells. Being an NPC class, it is intended to be worse than PC classes like wizard or sorcerer at every level.

It would make a good class for a NPC spelljammer pilot.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the mystic NPC class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency Mystics are skilled with all simple weapons. Mystics are not proficient with any type of armor nor with shields.

Summon Familiar At first level a mystic may summon a familiar, just like a sorcerer or wizard can.

Scribe Scroll At 5th level, a mystic gains the scribe scroll feat as a bonus feat. If the mystic already has the feat, they may select another feat from the wizard bonus feat list. If they select another feat, they must meet the prerequisites for it as normal.

Spells

A mystic casts arcane spells which are drawn from the mystic spell list (see below). A mystic must choose and prepare spells ahead of time (see below).

To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the mystic must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a mystic’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the mystic’s Intelligence modifier.

Like other spell-casters, a mystic can only cast a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Their base daily spell allotment is given on the table below. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if they have a high Intelligence score.

A mystic may know any number of spells. They must choose and prepare spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying their spellbook. While studying, the mystic decides which spells to prepare .

Spellbooks

A mystic must study their spellbook each day to prepare their spells. They cannot prepare any spell not recorded in their spellbook, except for read magic, which all mystics can prepare from memory.

A mystic begins play with a spellbook that contains all 0-level mystic spells plus one 1st level spell of your choice. For each point of Intelligence bonus the mystic has, the spellbook holds one additional 1st-level spell of your choice. At each new mystic level, they gain one new spell of any spell level they can cast (based on their new mystic level) for her spellbook. At any time, a mystic can also add spells found in other mystic’s spellbooks to their own.
